Joy for Mateus

A family campaign

Help us fill Mateus's days with joy.

Help Mateus's parents cover their living expenses so they can stay by his side.

Mateus is a playful, loving three-year-old who has been fighting hepatoblastoma, a rare childhood liver cancer, since he was two.

To care for him, his mom, Renata, put her career as a dentist on hold and his dad started driving for Uber for a more flexible schedule. With less income coming in, everyday bills have become a heavy weight.

The goal

Raise $5,000 to help Mateus's family pay essential living expenses, so his parents can spend this time with him.

ABOUT VER

VER – Volunteer Emergency Relief – is a non-profit that was founded on the above principle by Frederico Martins and Gustavo Couto, who, after a category 5 hurricane hit South Florida in the summer of 2017, decided to take action immediately. By mobilizing their communities around helping others, they were able to fully experience the acts of God right after the storm. Our mission is to bring people emergency relief and hope, changing one life at a time.

ACTS OF NATURE, NATURAL DISASTERS, STORMS, OTHER CATASTROPHES. THOSE ARE NOT THE ACTS OF GOD. THEY CAUSE DESPAIR, DESTRUCTION, AND EVEN DEATH. THE ACTIONS WE TAKE TO HELP OTHERS AFTER THE STORMS SHOW THE ACTS OF GOD!

One life at a time, thats how we change the world!

In Renata's words

Two years of courage.

  1. January 2025

Diagnosed at age two with hepatoblastoma. The tumor was already large, and the cancer had spread to both lungs.

  2. 2025

More than 16 cycles of chemotherapy and three lung surgeries. A procedure on the liver tumor caused severe complications and five weeks in intensive care.

  3. June 2025

    A liver transplant.

  4. October 2025

Chemotherapy ended, and the family hoped to finally begin rebuilding their lives.

  5. January 2026

The cancer returned in his lungs. More surgeries and chemotherapy followed, but the cancer proved resistant to treatment.

  6. Today

Mateus receives immunotherapy and an oral medication. His care team now considers his treatment palliative and encouraged the family to focus on making memories together.

Mateus in his mom's arms

We continue to hope that his current treatment will help him and give us more time together.

Make A Difference

Lean Organization

Unlike large non-profits, our donations go directly to those in need, and not to pay overhead costs.

Collecting Donations

Donations from corporations and individuals are collected, sorted, and then sent to the areas affected.

Run By Our Volunteers

We run our organization using our volunteers, known as “V-angels”, who, most of the time, pay for their own expenses.

Low Overhead Costs

Our operational costs are very low. Our goal is that at least 90% of all VER donations reach the people in need.
